Kung Fu Panda – meditate through movies

One movie series that I have really enjoyed and have returned to over the years is – Kung Fu Panda. The ‘Journey of the Hero’ is presented so beautifully with earthly wisdom and humor that both kids and grown ups can enjoy equally. The character development of Master Oogway and Po, The Dragon Warrior is so amazing. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the first movie.

One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why its called the present.

Let go of the illusion of control

Master Oogway, Kung Fu Panda

There is NO secret ingredient. You just have to believe.

Po, at the cusp of becoming Dragon Warrior

I feel the last one is one of the most deeply meditative movie line I have experienced, and resonates with the teachings of masters across cultural traditions. The caterpillar goes into the cocoon, perhaps despondent at its death, and with little realization that it could one day be a butterfly. But it has faith – it believes in the the wonder that is Mother Nature. And lo and behold out comes the majestic Monarch!

So my friends, when the sadhana (the practice) starts to wear you down and the monkey mind is ready to move on and give up. Tell it – BELIEVE!

In Kung Fu Panda 2, when Po is starting to have doubts whether he can really be a Dragon Warrior, the Soothsayer guides as such

Your story may not have such a happy beginning but that does not make you who you are, it is the rest of it- who you choose to be.
